Often we go through life thinking little of what comes after this life is over. We get busy living our lives, and don’t even like to think about the fact that one day our life on this earth will end. We make all kinds of other preparations such as a will; power of attorney; life insurance, but what about your soul? The question must be asked, and answered, what will happen to me after I die? Is there a Heaven? Is there a Hell? If so, which one am I headed to?
Some deny the existence of the after life altogether, claiming that they will just go 6 feet under and that’s the end of it. Others just think that as long as they are pretty good, they will somehow make it to Heaven, that place of eternal bliss, for surely we are too good to go to Hell, aren’t we?
-
The Bible definitely talks of both Heaven and Hell as being literal places. The Bible also tells us that God wants everyone to go to Heaven, and how we can be absolutely sure that Heaven will be our eternal home. Perhaps the best known Bible verse tells us of God’s love and desire for us to enjoy everlasting life. John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Yes, we must start with some bad news. Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Sinner, me? yes, all of us are. All of us have broken God’s commandments, making us sinners. We are not the “good” people we thought we were. The problem with our sin is that it has a price tag attached to it. Romans 6:23a says, For the wages of sin is death; That means that because of our sin, we don’t deserve to go to Heaven, rather we deserve to be separated from God for all eternity in a place called Hell.
-
Now the good news! Though we deserve to go to Hell, God has provided a way for us to go to Heaven. The last half of Romans 6:23 says, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. As we already said, God wants us to spend eternity in Heaven with Him. Jesus Christ, God the Son, came and lived a perfect life on this earth, then He took our sins upon Himself, died on the cross and rose the 3rd day so that through Him we can have eternal life. Eternal life is a gift to be received, we don’t deserve it, we cannot earn it, Eph. 2:8-9, but God in love offers it to all who will receive it.

Like all gifts, the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ must be received. Romans 10:13 says, For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. To receive God’s gift of salvation, you must recognize yourself as a sinner, and believing in Jesus Christ as the only Saviour, call upon Him to save you. When you call on the Lord to save you, you have God’s Word that you are saved – that’s a promise you can depend on! Remember John 3:16 says, …that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Based on the promises of God’s Word, all who receive Jesus Christ can have the assurance that when this life is over, they will go to Heaven. I John 5:13 says, These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. What a precious comfort to KNOW that you have eternal life! Do you know that you have eternal life? If not, why not receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour today?
If you would like to receive Christ as your Savior right now, bow your head and pray and ask Jesus to save you. You can pray something like this (you must be sincere, and mean it from your heart), “Jesus, I know I’m a sinner and I know that I deserve hell. Right now I accept your free gift of Salvation and want you to come into my life and save me and take me to heaven when I die. Thank you Jesus for saving me. Amen”
