There is no doubt that mothers hold a special place – both in the Bible and in our hearts. The impact of mothers is very evident – without a mom, none of us would be here! I’m sure many of us can look back in our lives to times when a mother’s love and sacrifice made a big impact on our life. The Bible commands us to honour our mothers (Exodus 20:12), and attaches great promise to it. Unfortunately, motherhood today is often looked down upon, and these dear ladies often don’t get the honour they deserve. Listen to the words of Proverbs 30:11, There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. May God help us not to be of that generation!
As we celebrate Mother’s Day today, may we take time to thank God for our mothers, and if possible, thank our mothers for all they have done for us. Proverbs 31:10, Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. As Proverbs 31:30 tells us (see below), this kind of mother deserves to be praised.
Mothers, as we honour you today, may you also be challenged to be the best mom you can be. The best thing you can do for your children is to be a woman who fears the Lord. Be an example to them and pray for them. There are examples in the Bible of mothers who feared God and those who didn’t, and the resulting influence they had on their children is evident. Consider the words of Proverbs 31:30, Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
